Many grapes are picked. Not all are chosen. But as we seek eloquent expressions of site and season there are some special spots in the vineyard that assert themselves immediately; a row of vines that can stop a winemaker in their tracks, a small planting that has achieved perfect harmony and resonance with the sun and soil.
This wine was Chosen from just such a place. The 777 clone is widely planted in our Parkburn Vineyard, but this particular block was identified early as having great potential to create this, a wine of great purity and presence.
Expect to see this youthful wine transform and evolve over a decade or more; please be aware a fine deposit may occur as a result of our minimal handling philosophy.

Decanter Wine Awards 2023, London - (93/100) - Packed with aromatic florals, black cherry and tart redcurrant; crunchy and youthful with epic tannins and a long finish.
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit - 5 Stars (97/100)
Offering power as well as sophistication, the wine shows dark cherry, smoked game, cedar and warm mushroom aromas on the nose, followed by a concentrated palate that's wonderfully ripe and persistent. Richly textured and complex with sturdy structure, promising to evolve magnificently. From the Parkburn Vineyard. At its best: 2024 to 2036. $99.00. www.rockburn.co.nz. Sept 2022.
Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews - 5 Stars, 18.5+/20 pts (94 pts)
Deep ruby-red, lighter on the rim. The nose is softly full, with aromas of red and black cherry with a suggestion of cranberry entwined with lifted floral and warm spices. Medium-bodied, aromas of red and black cherry and cranberry melded with black pepper, cinnamon, hibiscus, savoury earth, and underlying richness. The mouthfeel is silky, with natural, supple tannins contributing to a light grip. Balanced, lively acidity carries spice through to a clean, lifted finish. This elegant Pinot Noir with underlined richness shows red and black fruit, flows on a lifted line of floral and acidity and has a fine tannin structure. Match with pork and duck over the next 6-8 years. Fruit from Parkburn, clone 777, fermented in 7-tonne fermenter, cold soaked for 8 days, fermented over 1 week with daily plunging, 13.5% alc, post ferment maceration for 10 days, then aged 14 months in 1 & 2 y.o. French oak barrels. Sep 2022 RRP $99.
Bob Campbell (The Real Review) - 5 Stars (95/100)
Medium-bodied, supple, spicy pinot noir with cherry, berry, floral, red rose, plum and anise-spice flavours supported by fine, ripe tannins. Certainly accessible now but with the potential to develop well with bottle age.

A beautiful full bodied expression of Pinot Noir’s darker, more structured side in a full bodied wine with flavours of ripe fleshy black plums and cherries. This expression of a single vineyard, single clone (777) Pinot Noir also has no new oak, which allows the fruit flavours to shine in this wine. It’s made with grapes grown on the warm, well drained Parkburn Vineyard, situated north of Cromwell in Central Otago.
Smooth, textural and weighty in the mouth, this drinks well now but has good potential to evolve into a savoury tasting wine for eight to nine years, potentially even longer.
Rebecca Gibb MW (Vinous.com) - 93/100
The 2021 Chosen 777 hails from a single block of one variety - Pinot Noir - and one clone - 777. It fills the mouth with its seamless shape and holds onto it with its lightly grippy, tannic structure. It certainly has serious intentions and while there might be an early element of sweet fruit, the finish is dry and firm. In its youth, it is rather sturdy and uptight but thanks to it combination of structure, sinew and concentration you sense that this will go on to better things with time. This burly Pinot should be served with a big hunk of protein if you want to approach in youth but with age you'll find greater rewards.
James Suckling - 92/100
Round and fruity with notes of cherries, raspberries, sweet spices and wafers. Medium body with silky tannins. Creamy with plenty of raspberry and strawberry character on the palate. Delicious finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap. (April 2023)
